Despite a clean and reliable solid state platform and high value-add uses that include specialized cooling and custom refrigeration, widespread thermoelectric commercial adoption has been hindered by low ZT; an important gauge of Carnot Power Conversion Efficiency. Presently too low to compete with or displace incumbent power generation and refrigeration technologies, Phononic Devices’ approach combines nanostructured thermally insulating materials designed to enhance thermopower with a manufacturing-friendly platform. Our approach is projected to dramatically enhance thermal-to-electric conversion efficiency.
